Abstract
Railway, rail-road, and rail-pedestrian level crossings fall under what is known as "interaction environments" within the operational context of railways as defined for our complex socio-technical system. These specific environments form a risk interface in the operational processes related to both railway and motor vehicle modes of transport, including pedestrian traffic.
This paper provides a brief overview of two traffic light projects designed to provide more information on the protection status and operability of level rail crossings, aiming to improve the success rate of pedestrian performance and the end operators in both rail and motor vehicle modes.
The primary purpose of these actions is to reduce the rate of risks occurring at rail-pedestrian level crossings, where a significant portion of incidents is attributed to active third-party failures.
